2024 Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada: Supporting Use and Application

Monday, April 22, 2024

8:30am - 4:30pm

No fee, but pre-registration is required.  Space is limited.

Please note, this event is not accredited for continuing nursing education.

The National Collaborating Centres for Public Health were commissioned by the Public Health Agency of Canada to update the 2008 Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada through engagement with the Canadian public health community.   Core competencies reflect essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for effective public health practice. Nurses make up the largest proportion of Canada’s public health workforce.  This session will describe the process used to update the 2024 Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada.  The conversation will focus on the use and application of the competencies for Public Health Nursing.  Participants will provide feedback on the support needed at individual, organizational, and systems levels.  This information will help the National Collaborating Centres and Community Health Nurses of Canada to plan activities to support the 2024 Core Competencies in the years ahead.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the 2024 Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada framework, categories, and statements.
  • Explore how the core competencies will be used in public health training and practice.
  • Identify facilitators and barriers to use and application.
  • Discuss opportunities for the National Collaborating Centres for Public Health and Community Health Nurses of Canada to support use and application.

Speaker(s)

  • Claire Betker, Scientific Director, National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health and others to be determined.
